The Southern California Institute’s semi-annual California Forum is partnering with the San Diego Business Journal
to provide business and wealth advisors with the current tools and resources to help Family Businesses navigate the tributaries and ramifications of their potential choices.

Accountants, insurance professionals, financial advisors, bankers, attorneys, and other wealth professionals must build teams that can provide optimum service, atypical strategies, and solutions for their clients. This program will focus on what’s old, what’s new, what’s working, and what’s not in regards to topics such as: the stages of business, family dynamics, exit options, insurance, legal, and tax strategies.

Explore how to attract and engage these clients through an understanding and appreciation of business owner needs, and often very different perspectives.

**Advisors attending this program will have the opportunity to partner
with SCI and SBDJ for an Owner’s Awards event in October.**

The California Forum 2018 will be held at
The Estancia – La Jolla, CA

presented by Trever Acers, Managing Director and Gregory Banner, CFP®, CLU®, CRTP

How do you respond when someone expresses interest in acquiring your client’s company? This presentation includes guidance on how to respond to the interest, how to assess if a sale now will achieve your client’s objectives, and how to help navigate the process should your client decide to take the next step. Greg and Trever will provide real-world insight and a few simple exercises to determine the factors that matter most to achieve a “successful” sale. This pragmatic dialogue will strengthen your ability to assess and take advantage of these exciting opportunities when they occur.

Business owners want more time and more money. Helping your business owner clients identify with and move through the Five Stages of Business will facilitate the realization of that goal. The evolution of who is responsible for separate core functions and increasing standardization of processes and reporting is key. Steve and Shelley will share a method to facilitate team alignment and empowerment, refine the directions of the company, and lay the foundation to create efficient, targeted implementation plans for your clients.

ESOPs Revealed;
presented by Melisa Silverman, JD, CEPA, CVA, SBA, and CMEA and Martin Staubus, Executive Director

ESOPs are almost always talked about in the abstract with the benefits highlighted and the realities ignored. Join Melisa and Martin as they explore the factors in considering an ESOP from the perspectives of a member of the family running the business, family members not in the business, in-laws and out-laws, key executives, long-term employees, and ultimately the owner. Then, from each perspective consider the factors of years 3, 5, and 7 into an ESOP, and how it might feel.

panelists include: Trey Fairman, JD, LL.M, Kelli Yount, Mindy Cagan-Joslin, and Rebecca J. Haines, Esq., MBA

Asset protection for business owners and successful families is all the rage. But before considering protection strategies, an understanding of liability and risk realities for your clients is imperative. Join this diverse group of P&C, life, and legal experts as they review how to uncover, properly identify, and effectively communicate obvious and non-obvious risks to clients. Learn how to assess integrated protection strategies as they not only solve for one issue but inter-play with wealth transfer, income taxation, credit access, and family dynamics.

1:50pm – 2:40pm

It Should be About the Net Cash Flow After the Sale of a Business;
presented by Will Duffy, CFC and Danny Wexler, JD

Business owners spend their life building their business and usually hope to sell one day – or at least exit in some fashion. It’s easy to forget to plan for what to do with the proceeds once the business is sold. Will and Danny will review how to help business owners take post-tax dollars from a business sale and keep the growth on those funds tax exempt for the rest of their life.

2:40pm – 3:00pm

Networking Break

3:00pm – 3:50pm

Business & Investment Immigration Fueling California Economy & Real Estate;
presented by Robert Garmo, Esq. and Freddy Garmo, Esq.

We are in an age of merit based immigration, where the richest and smartest immigrants are given preference over others to enter the U.S. and start businesses, or buy and develop real estate through immigration programs such as EB-5, E-2, & L-1 visas. Join Robert and Freddy as they share how you can help your California business and real estate owners benefit from this policy and attract foreign capital to help their businesses grow.

3:50pm – 4:40pm

The Numbers Aren’t the Most Important Thing- They’re Everything!
presented by Matt Garrett, Founder and CEO

Matt will share actual financial information and key financial benchmark examples to address specific finance and accounting problems (both known and unknown) your business owner clients are likely encountering. Gain an understanding on how you can be a resource for topics such as: Improving accountability, knowing what is going to happen before it happens, proper financial forecasting, The Triple Bottom Line, and avoiding accounting fraud.
